“Octavia E. Butler’s Public Legacy” (Nov. 18)

Tarshia L. Stanley discusses the life and letters of American science fiction author Octavia E. Butler.

Professor Stanley’s lecture, “Octavia E. Butler’s Public Legacy: Celebrating Life and Letters,” will begin at 1 PM, in 215 Dauer Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

About Tarshia L. Stanley

Tarshia L. Stanley is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of English, Spelman College. She teaches courses in film and media studies, particularly focusing on images of women of African descent. Stanley has authored articles critiquing depictions of black women in African, African American, and Caribbean cinema as well as black female iconography in American popular culture. She edited The Encyclopedia of Hip Hop Literature (Greenwood Press, 2008) and is at work on a monograph, entitled Mothering Our Daughters: Mediating the Messages, about helping girls navigate the messages they receive about femininity from the mass media. She is also editing a volume for the Modern Language Association’s teaching series entitled Approaches to Teaching the Works of Octavia E. Butler.

Stanley is the founding president of the Octavia E. Butler Literary Society and currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of English. She received the PhD and MA from the University of Florida and her AB from Duke University.
