The Florida Museum of Natural History’s “Creative B” summer film series features entertaining science fiction films and roundtable discussions by scholars, scientists, and artists.

little_shop_of_horrors_poster-smallThis summer’s series continues with Roger Corman’s 1960 comedy horror film, The Little Shop of Horrors. The story of a nebbishy florist’s assistant who cultivates an intelligent plant that feeds on human flesh and blood, the film has become a cult classic. Shot in three days on a budget of $28,000 on borrowed sets and starring mostly unknown actors, including a young Jack Nicholson, it has since inspired an off Broadway musical, Little Shop of Horrors, which was made into a 1986 feature film and enjoyed a Broadway revival. The musical remains a standard of the American musical theater and has renewed interest in its darker, lower-rent original.

The evening’s events begin at 7 PM. The screening will be preceded and followed by a roundtable discussion featuring:

  • Ginger Andrews – Dental Hygienist
  • Ian Breheny – Museum Operations Specialist at the FLMNH, and co-founder of the film series
  • Jon Bremer – Lab Technician, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity
  • Tim Lawrence – Special effects artist and concept sculptor
  • Lary Reeves – PhD candidate, UF Department of Entomology and Nematology

The Little Shop of Horrors is unrated. Some dialogue and scenes may not be suitable for younger children.

On July 22, beginning at 7 PM, the series will continue with Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks’ 1951 sf alien invasion classic The Thing from Another World.

All “Creative B” events are free and open to the public.
